The tar barrel tradition in Ottery St Mary is hundreds of years old, and is an annual tradition held on the 5th November each year.
Ottery St Mary is now the only town in the country that carry’s full sized lighted tar barrels through the streets.
In the afternoon and early evening there are women’s and boys barrels, as the evening goes on the barrels get larger, weighing around 30 kilos.
The bonfire is now a major part of the evening situated on the banks of the River Otter, a lot of people like to associate the fairground with the bonfire as they stand adjacent to one another.
