The Details

We are so proud to be able to bring you a property of the calibre of Watch Hill.

Watch Hill is a house steeped in history and adventure; an Georgian manor house dating back to 1922, situated in pretty Budleigh Salterton. The house was commissioned by American millionaire Blake Thompson, and is one of the numerous private residences designed by architect William Hatchard-Smith.

Between 1939 and the early 1970s, more than 1500 overseas servicemen with no other home to go to whilst on leave, were invited to stay at Watch Hill. This wonderful house was also used as a film setting for the 1986 episode of Agatha Christie's Sleeping Murder! Guests who stay at Watch Hill should feel part of something truly exciting; this house is like no other.

With nine bedrooms split across the 1st and 2nd floor, Watch Hill can accommodate a total of 18 guests in self-catering splendour! The house boasts impressive period reception rooms, a state of the art kitchen, a fully equipped playroom for younger guests and a games room complete with pool table, television and playstation. Set within landscaped gardens and mixed oak woodland, which is fully enclosed and dog friendly; we're sure that Watch Hill will appeal to young and old guests alike. 

The ground floor includes, a breakfast room, dining room, snug, living room, office, main entrance hall, utility and boot room. The majority of the ground floor exhibits genuine period parquet flooring, and is lit up with two period vintage chandeliers. Outside there is ample parking for all your guests, and to the rear of the property a sublime south facing, brick paved terrace overlooking Budleigh Salterton.  

The bedrooms include three en-suites; one master super king and two king beds. There are a further four spacious king bedrooms, one double bedroom and a huge childrens bedroom complete with London bus bunk beds. All bedrooms have gorgeous bespoke furniture, super soft furnishings and unique designer bedding.

Watch Hill lies in the heart of East Devon, on the Jurassic Coast and an extensive area of outstanding natural beauty. The River Otter estuary - a Special Area of Conservation - is a short walk away, as is the Victorian seaside town of Budleigh Salterton.
Nearby Exmouth is simply perfect for family days on the beach and water sports enthusiasts.
Cathedral city of Exeter is a short 25 minute drive away with a superb selection of shopping and restaurants.
The nearby Regency seaside towns of Sidmouth and Lyme Regis boast some of the most iconic and beautiful days out on the Jurassic Coast.
Further inland by 40 minute drive is Dartmoor National Park, and endless days walking and exploring the breath-taking and historic moorland and tors.

Spectacular House Near The Sea

We stayed at Watch Hill over a bank holiday weekend in August. The house is huge and beautiful, with excellent grounds and a fantastic sea view. Budleigh Salterton itself is a great seaside town, which I highly recommend. We booked the house directly through Unique Holiday Stays and dealt with Emilie who was a fantastic host. Our group was larger than most, and they put out extra beds to accommodate us. If your looking for a spectacular house with a large group near the sea, you'll struggle to beat Watch Hill. Thanks for accommodating us Emilie and making our stay so pleasant.

We had a fabulous time at this glorious location

Budleigh is a gem of a resort and you could walk everywhere from the house. The accommodation was great and the amazing playroom was a wonderful asset for a multi generational party including toddlers. Kitchen facilities more than adequate for large party and bbq was very useful when we had a good day. The garden was great and, weather allowing , we had drinks outside looking at the sea in the evening. The stuff of which memories are made. Thank you.

The home was amazing, impeccably clean and spacious

The house doesn't really get hot inside even when it's scorching out. The location is amazing with beautiful views on the sea from almost every room. Shops & beach walking distance away from the property, and lots of landmarks easily accessible by car. The host was very welcoming, quick to respond and helpful, we couldn't recommend her more ! Overall a beautiful haven to spend a family vacation by the beach.

An absolutely amazing house in the heart of a lovely seaside village

The hosts were very attentive to our needs before our visit and answered any questions within the hour. The house itself is incredible. So much space both inside and outside, with a lovely garden and sea views. The kitchen was well equipped with everything we needed and even a hamper to make us feel very welcome. The rooms and bathrooms are also great and well equipped. Would thoroughly recommend to anyone who needs a large space for get togethers!

An amazing house to spend our reunion weekend in

The location is great and the house had lots of thoughtful additions! The outside space is perfect for big groups and I can imagine would be beautiful in the summer! The hosts dealt with an issue with the house before our stay very professionally and quickly. Overall a lovely house! Highly recommend.

An amazing unforgettable holiday

An amazing house and fantastic location that I would recommend for any large family wishing to celebrate a special occasion. The children loved the zip wire and tree house and will have lots of fond memories from our weekend stay. The beach is just minutes away and a walk along the coastal path offers stunning views. We'd love to come back!

Rented the house for husband's 50th with our friends

The house is stunning with a view of the sea. There are lots of large and airy rooms with great facilities - the large wine fridge was certainly appreciated. The kitchen was beautiful, modern and well equipped, bedrooms large and comfortable as were all the bathrooms. The whole house was spotless. And only five mins walk from the beach. Unique Holiday Stays were very helpful and friendly when replying to my queries. I would definitely recommend staying at this wonderful house - we were all very reluctant leave on Monday morning!

spotlessly clean...

I arranged a special birthday get together for my wife's special birthday. It was a gathering of all her brothers and sisters plus partners. As she is one of six we needed a large house and Watch Hill House was our choice. The property itself is beautiful, ideally located close to the town centre and beach and is proportioned beautifully as well. From the word go, enquiring, booking, checking in, all were managed extremely well by Emilie and her team and without fuss. We found the house spotlessly clean and very well equipped as well as being extremely comfortable. I really could not find fault at all. Fantastic!
